Supply Chain roles on the move in Malaysia

Following the Chinese New Year there has been an increase in the number of managerial and senior level supply chain roles in Malaysia, says recruiting experts Hays.

According to the recruiter’s latest Hays Quarterly Report for April to June, strong demand exists for Procurement Lead /Managers, Planning Professionals and Supply Chain Managers.

“In the second quarter movement will continue to rise at the senior level as employees collect their annual bonus and many turn their attention to external opportunities,” says Tom Osborne, Country Manager of Hays in Malaysia.

"Investment in the manufacturing sector has moved towards higher value-added activities in fast-growing segments such as automotive, medical devices and telecommunications, enabling Malaysia to be plugged into the global supply chain. This is generating new high-skilled jobs in the sector.

“Despite high levels of foreign direct investment, employers remain primarily focused on Malaysian candidates as they continue to seek talented local professionals.”

According to the recruiter, high demand exists for Procurement Leads / Managers. “Hands-on candidates with staff management experience are very much in demand, as are experienced buyers with specific category knowledge,” says Tom.

“There is a mixture of new and replacement roles, with the focus being on candidates with a proven track record of cost savings through the use of strong negotiation skills and effective supplier management. We expect this demand to continue as new companies enter the market and existing companies realise the direct impact a strong procurement team can have on their profit.

“Planning professionals in the areas or supply, demand and production are also sought after due to a shortage of candidates in the Malaysia market and the preference of hiring managers to focus on candidates from a similar industry.”

Experienced Supply Chain Managers remain in demand, particularly those with experience working abroad or in large multinational companies, says the recruiter.

“Many companies who have invested in new systems are now focusing on securing leaders who can help maximize their return on investment, working to develop the internal process/procedures and the efficiency of the team,” says Tom.

“Contract Advisors and Contract Managers are also increasingly sought after. Employers are focusing on candidates with strong claims management experience as well as those who can contribute during the tender stage.”
