A recent survey by recruiting experts Hays has revealed 80% of respondents intend to look for a new job in 2020.

Hays surveyed over 5,500 people in nearly 150 countries and asked whether they intended to look for a new job in 2020. Of those that said they were looking for a new role, 40% stated it was time for a change, while 22% said it was due to a lack of training and career progression in their current role and 13% said it was due to them being dissatisfied with their current salary and benefits.

Respondents who stated they aren’t actively looking for a new job (11%), said they could be convinced to move jobs if they were offered an improved salary or benefits (32%); if there was more variety or excitement in the prospective role (23%); and if better training and progression opportunities were offered (22%).

Tom Osborne, Managing Director of Hays Malaysia said; “The findings of our poll show that a great number of professionals have decided it’s time for a change and the New Year provides the perfect opportunity. However, it’s important you don’t just jump straight into your search without considering what you want from your next opportunity and making sure you take the appropriate steps such as preparing your CV and updating your social profiles.”

Hays offers advice to those potentially looking for a new job in the New Year.

Are you moving for the right reasons?
Tom advises; “You need to ensure you are moving for the right reasons before you begin searching for a new role. If you’ve lost your love for the job and you’re spending your days clock watching, then now is the time to start looking. However, if you are leaving because you aren’t being challenged in your current role, but there are still plenty of opportunities within your current organisation, then consider whether there are any moves you can make internally first.”

Ask yourself what you want from your next opportunity
Tom comments; “If you have decided that it is time to start searching then start by thinking about what your ideal opportunity would be; such as the job remit, the potential progression paths, the company size, culture and industry.”

Update your online and offline CVs
Tom says; “Update your CV and any of your online profiles. Add any new skills learnt, experience, awards or additional training/courses. Whether you’re creating one from scratch or updating an old CV, use the Hays CV Guide for all the tips and advice you need to ensure it gets noticed.”

Applying for roles
Tom advises; “Register with a recruiter, they can recommend suitable roles to you, as well as provide you with valuable insights into the company you’re applying to, and help you to prepare for the interview. Tailor your CV and cover letter to each application, that will boost your chances of getting a job interview.”

Prepare for interviews
Tom says; “In the interview it’s important you link your skills and experience to those stated in the job spec. You need to be clear on how your present job equips you for this particular opportunity.”

Stay motivated
Tom comments; “It is important that you keep your spirits high during your job search, even if you don’t get an interview for a role that you want. Not every application leads to success, but it’s important not to give up. You should also take regular breaks and reward yourself for a productive job searching session. The key is to stay motivated.”
